GutGard DGL Clinical Evidence

Unpublished paper.

Topic:
Can GutGard DGL (a proprietary licorice extract) help alleviate the symptoms of functional dyspepsia (indigestion)?

Background:
Dyspepsia is a common ailment, characterized by chronic pain in the upper abdomen. It is called “functional dyspepsia” when the pain occurs in patients with no identifiable lesions in the gastrointestinal tract.

Study Type:
Human clinical intervention trial

Study Design:
Randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled. Subjects took GutGard or a placebo. The subjects’ symptoms were measured on a 7-point Likert scale; global assessment of efficacy and quality of life scores on the Nepean Dyspepsia Index were measured at 15 days and 30 days.

Subjects:
75 subjects with functional dyspepsia

Dosage:
75 or 150 mg, 2 times/day, for 30 days

Results:
GutGard significantly reduced indigestion symptoms at 15 and 30 days compared to placebo. Subjects receiving the lower dose reported a 37%-57% improvement in symptoms, while subjects receiving the higher dose reported a 16%-58% improvement. Subjects in the placebo group, by contrast, reported a 12%-37% improvement.

GutGard DGL Mechanism of Action:

GutGuard possess anti-inflammatory properties, which act on the stomach mucosa to help relieve the pain and discomfort of indigestion by inhibiting the COX and LOX inflammatory pathways.

It has also been shown to increase the pH (reduce the acidity) of gastric fluid in an ulcer model, which likely accounts for its ability to alleviate heartburn.
